Escape rooms have become one of the most popular entertainment activities for young people and adults. The COVID-19 pandemic has posted significant impacts on theatrical and digital entertainment. With the combination of local lockdowns and social distancing, many offline and outdoor entertainments are temporarily closed and operate with a limited capacity. As a result, the majority of people cannot attend outdoor and offline escape room experiences with friends.
Vscape is an online VR platform that enables people to participate in online VR games and escape room events. This project enables people to improve their ability to solve problems, a good sense of teamwork, and explore brand-new immersive VR experiences.
The use of Virtual Reality (VR) has given new meaning to a variety of professions. The use of virtual reality in several fields is bringing about dramatic developments. VR technology is one of the major breakthroughs of the 21st century. It is used in medical, education, engineering, architecture, training, and entertainment, among other things (Yeasmin, 2020).
The goal of this project was to create an online VR experience platform that mimics the surroundings of an escape room that enables users to participate in a highly interactive event and experience a sense of community from the comfort of their own homes.
• To combine immersive experience with online games, create a new escape room game experience and a sense of community through VR technology.
• Create immersive VR games that allow players to play online VR escape room games with the general realistic experience online, even at home.
• An online website that enables users to access information toward VR experience and attend our online VR escape room activities.
The design work of Vscape was conducted based on the approach of Lean UX. Lean UX is a very useful technique that enables designers to obtain reliable feedback as early as possible so that they can make early changes or decisions at a different stage of development. It is common to apply Lean UX when designers are working on project that use Agile development methods.
From the initial findings from our surveys that we had carried out , we found that the majority of our sample of participants who had taken part in this survey had previous experience with both VR as well as escape rooms. Which helped us to shape our idea and build a better experience.
Further findings suggested that a majority of participants loved a strong story/ narrative to their escape room experience followed by a horror themed setting with plain jump-scares and element of surprise.
From the data that was gathered from the survey as well as background research 2 user personas were created: a primary user and a secondary user. A product team may use user personas to address one of their most essential questions: "Who are we designing for?" Understanding target consumers' expectations, worries, and motivations helps to build a product that meets their requirements and thus be successful. (Faller, 2019)
Analyzing user journey maps can assist in understanding user preferences so that their needs can be considered when designing. Understanding the user's feelings, motivations, and experiences can aid in the design of a product that meets their needs, identifying the features required for the product, and improving information such as the user interface (Optimizely, n.d.).
The game has been enriched with
more interesting settings and
enhanced audio-visual effects.
The web and game user interface is
simple and clean, easy for users
to understand and operate.
Setting a clear context for the game is
essential. It helps the user to become
better integrated into the game character.
My role and responsibility in this project are to design an online web platform that enables users to access our VR escape room game and experience. The reason why we chose to create a web platform instead of a mobile application is that the web platform is easier to access and can provide information toward different aspects of the VR experience. Our online website not only provides users direct access to the game but acts as a community that enables people to involve in an immersive VR environment when they can play VR games from the comfort of their own homes.
Vscape makes use of emerging technology (Virtual Reality), and VR has grown in popularity in recent years, with more expected in the future. As a result, the project has a lot of room for growth and development. Following usability testing with target users, it is expected that several updates will be made to improve the game and web design. We will implement more design principles and add more gaming features to Vscape so that users can have a better experience. The project has a lot of room for expansion, and hopefully it will serve as a good foundation for the discovery of more VR games that can be developed.
